Two Business Graduate Degrees Reimagined with a Bold AI Focus

Beginning this fall, two graduate degrees within the College of Business’s Department of Operations Management and Information Systems (OM&IS) will be reimagined to emphasize their focus on artificial intelligence and analytics.

Formerly known as the Master of Science in Data Analytics (MSDA) degree, this degree has been transformed into the Master of Science in Business Analytics and AI (MSBA&AI). This change has been made to better align with emerging workforce needs and evolving industry demand. This name change is designed to reflect the program’s current and increasing focus on the applications of data analytics and artificial intelligence to business decision-making processes.

“Over the past decade, data analytics has matured into a broader, more strategic discipline that integrates artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning into business decision-making,” said OM&IS Chair Charles Petersen. “Employers increasingly seek graduates who cannot only analyze data but also design and apply AI-driven models that enhance automation, predictive insights and competitive advantage.”

The program’s curriculum has already expanded beyond traditional descriptive and predictive analytics to include courses in machine learning, AI applications and data-driven business strategy. The new title better represents these advanced capabilities and signals to prospective students and employers that the program equips graduates with both technical proficiency (data science, AI tools) and business acumen (strategy, process optimization and value creation). This program will continue to be offered asynchronously online and can be completed in as little as 12 months.

Our Master of Science in Management Information Systems degree has now been redesigned as our Master of Science program in Artificial Intelligence for Business (MSAIB). This program prepares you for leadership roles at the intersection of business and AI technologies and focuses on the use of artificial intelligence, computer technologies and data analytics to improve business processes. Graduates will gain knowledge in current AI applications, information systems, business analytics and the application of modern information management theories with intelligent automation. This program will be offered online through both synchronous sessions and asynchronous lectures.

“Through this innovative program, our MSAIB graduates will learn to align information systems and AI solutions with business strategy while developing business solutions using programming language AI tools,” said Petersen. “We will teach our students how to analyze and model organizational processes, design and create databases to manage business data and use statistical methods to understand the real-world impacts of business decisions.”

While we are sharpening our focus on preparing graduates for an AI-driven workforce, the exceptional value of our learning experience, faculty and resources remains unchanged.

While these new degree titles will only apply in the 2026-2027 Graduate Catalog and after, students should expect to see the program names change on our websites and other marketing materials as we prepare for the change. It is important to note that all current MSDA and MIS students will be able to complete their intended degree without disruption.

“As always, our students’ success remains our top priority,” said College of Business Dean Joan Phillips-Hernandez. “We are working carefully to ensure a smooth transition on curriculum and degree plans. The programs will continue to be taught by our elite faculty and will continue to maintain the coveted AACSB accreditation status. Our goal is to enhance the value of this degree while continuing to prepare our students to lead the AI-ready workforce. We are excited about this next chapter and the opportunities it will create for our students and graduates.”
