Susie Horton, office administrator in the Department of Operations Management and Information Systems (OMIS) in the College of Business, was recognized with the The Presidential Award for Staff Excellence for her sustained record of service, leadership and dedication to students, faculty, and the broader NIU community.
This award recognizes up to six staff members per year who have gone above and beyond the specific duties assigned to them and have demonstrated excellence in their work. These individuals positively influence the work environment, foster cooperation, achieve goals and/or overcome obstacles/challenges, while carrying out employment responsibilities.
Horton has served NIU since 2011 and is widely regarded as an essential pillar of the OMIS department. In her role, she supports faculty teaching, research, and service by coordinating travel, managing reimbursements and expenses, organizing departmental meetings, and assisting with course scheduling. Colleagues note that her accuracy, consistency, and follow‑through allow departmental leadership and faculty to focus on their core academic missions with confidence.
Beyond her administrative responsibilities, Horton has made a lasting impact through her initiative and commitment to engagement. She independently coordinates guest speakers, supports alumni engagement efforts such as HAVI Lab activities, organizes the department’s annual scholarship ceremony, and plans the OMIS holiday celebration, helping to foster a strong sense of community. She has also coordinated faculty candidate visits and served on major search committees, including the College of Business Dean’s Search Committee, contributing her organizational expertise and institutional knowledge.
Kelsey Johnson, director of strategic and innovative practices in Administration and Finance, praised Horton’s ability to anticipate needs and take ownership. “Susie has built a remarkable record of service that consistently exceeds the expectations of her role,” Johnson said. “She takes ownership toward a solution rather than redirecting students or colleagues elsewhere, ensuring they receive clear, timely support.” Johnson also highlighted Horton’s willingness to serve as a mentor, “sharing best practices across college units, and investing time to support and develop student employees, actively contributing to the professional growth and success of those around her.”
