Alumnus David J. Kalinowski, ’89, Brings Business Expertise to MBA Students

With a career spanning more than three decades in competitive intelligence, David Kalinowski, ’89, serves as a shining example of Huskie grit and determination while also showing the profound impact of giving back.

As president of Proactive Worldwide Inc., which he cofounded in 1995 with fellow NIU College of Business alumnus Gary Maag, ’90, Kalinowski leads a team that provides powerful competitive intelligence to C-suite executives to support mission-critical decisions. In other words, he offers executives strategies for collecting information about their external market landscape such as competitors, suppliers and customers, and partners. This provides independent, objective and unique insights through analysis to help leaders gain and maintain an advantage in their industries.

And the value of this intelligence cannot be overstated.

“In one word, we offer perspective,” said Kalinowski. “The results of our work foster competition, help companies make or save money, provide consumers better pricing, and contribute toward product and service innovation. We help companies make better, informed strategic and tactical decisions based on evidence-based intelligence that ultimately help them to satisfy their customers’ needs.”

He notes that Proactive Worldwide allows its clients to avoid surprises and improve short- and long-term planning.

“Competitive intelligence insights provide in-depth understanding of external competitive environments, opportunities and threats,” Kalinowski added. “Competitive intelligence analytical tools and frameworks couple qualitative and quantitative methodologies to provide knowledge to clients beyond what is publicly available. Our clients make critical strategic investment decisions based off our firm’s analysis, insights, implications and perspectives.”

Because of his experience with these strategic analyses, Kalinowski is a generous contributor to College of Business MBA courses, offering expertise during guest lectures.

“David brings tremendous knowledge of trends in the competitive intelligence industry and provides valuable and relevant information to our students who are leaders in a variety of businesses. As our students continue to enhance their leadership skills and consider the future of the business landscape, David’s expertise is invaluable,” said Anthony Preston, assistant dean of Graduate Business Programs.

The cornerstone of Kalinowski’s journey lies in his commitment to nurturing emerging talent.

“I believe in helping others succeed as best I can.” he said. “Giving back to NIU helps me fulfill my purpose — making a positive difference in the lives of others. I love sharing my three-plus decades of knowledge with others who are in their early stages of their competitive intelligence careers. I’d like to think I transfer my love and enthusiasm for this field to others and play my role to motivate and inspire them.”

Kalinowski’s understanding of the competitive intelligence niche only comes from years of experience. After graduating from NIU in political science in 1989, Kalinowski’s interest in competitive intelligence was sparked by an unexpected twist — an invitation to interview for a role that would shape his future.

“I was able to work for a small, boutique consulting firm in Downers Grove, Illinois, which specialized in competitive intelligence,” he said. “What attracted me was having the opportunity to piece together fragments of information and convert it to intelligence through analysis, and then be able to deliver that work to dozens of Fortune 500 executives. Seeing how this market intelligence impacted multimillion and sometimes multibillion-dollar decisions was interesting.”

This fascination marked the beginning of a journey that has influenced over 75 Fortune 500 companies and more than 200 of the Fortune 1000 across diverse sectors.

Kalinowski climbed the ranks in competitive intelligence, holding a variety of roles including researcher, analyst, project manager and business developer before cofounding Proactive Worldwide. Each role molded his perspective, transforming him into a thought leader with an innate understanding of the strategic intricacies that drive success for global corporations.

“In September 1995, my cofounder Gary Maag and I decided that we had lots of great ideas and the passion to work. In October 1995, Proactive Worldwide was born. My first son was born in August 1995, so I had plenty of motivation to make sure I kept up my income stream. Naturalist John Burroughs said, ‘Leap and the net will appear,’ and that’s exactly what we did, and it did!”

Kalinowski noted that the first three years involved working six or seven days a week for 20 hours a day until he and Maag hired their first employee in 1998. They now have over 40 full-time team members, making their company one of the largest firms in the world that specialize in competitive intelligence.

Kalinowski’s expertise has also extended to two coauthored books – “New Directions: A Competitive Intelligence Tale” (2010) and “The CI-Driven CEO” (2022), which reflect his zeal for empowering others with insights.

His advice in his teaching and writing is a testament to his personal and professional journey. “Take chances, take action and don’t be afraid to fail,” he said.
