Michele Kaczka, Marketing Instructor and Internship Coordinator, Builds Students’ Confidence

By Adriana Betancourt

The NIU College of Business is proud to spotlight Michele Kaczka, a marketing instructor and internship coordinator who brings a unique blend of guidance, compassion and positivity to all her roles. Kaczka is known for her thoughtful approach to teaching, her ability to see strength in every student and the genuine joy she brings into the classroom and beyond. Her warm presence and bright energy make students feel supported, seen and encouraged to reach their full potential.

Whether she’s collaborating with students, mentoring them through their academic journey or celebrating their growth long after graduation, Kaczka has made a positive impact on her students. In the Q&A below, she reflects on her teaching philosophy, the moments that inspire her and the values she hopes students carry with them long after her classroom.

Q: What inspired you to pursue teaching, especially in your field?

A: I was inspired by both the mentorship I received within the Department of Marketing and by our exceptional marketing students. When I first joined NIU, I served in an administrative role as the coordinator of the NIU sales program. As I spent more time engaging with students and learning the inner workings of the program, I was encouraged to take on a more formal teaching role. That combination of support, curiosity and connection ultimately sparked my passion for teaching.

Q: What do you hope students take away from your classes

A: I hope every student leaves with something meaningful they can apply to their professional or personal life — even if it’s just one small but impactful “nugget.” Every student is unique, and not everyone will love every class, no matter how passionate I am about the topic. My goal is that somewhere along the way, they gain one insight, piece of advice or “aha moment” that stays with them long after the course ends.

Q: How do you help students build confidence in their work?

A: I focus on what students are doing well and build from there. Everyone has individual strengths, and it’s important to recognize and speak to those on a personal level rather than offering broad, one-size-fits-all feedback. Confidence grows when students feel seen, supported and encouraged based on their unique abilities.

Q: What do you enjoy most about working with NIU students?

A: I truly enjoy collaborating with them and learning from their experiences. We all come from different backgrounds, and the exchange of perspectives enriches the classroom and broadens all of our horizons. Their energy, openness and willingness to share make NIU students very special to work with.

Q: Can you share a moment or experience that has made you proud as a faculty member?

A: I am proud of our students for so many reasons — their professionalism, their effort and the kindness they show toward each other, just to name a few. One of my greatest joys is seeing alumni return to campus as guest speakers or mentors. Watching how they’ve grown — whether one year or 10 years after graduation — is incredibly rewarding and reminds me why I love this work.

Q: What advice would you give to students who are navigating their academic or career journey?

A: Show up and try to find at least one positive thing to carry with you each day. Even if you’re not completely thrilled with a course or a current job, focus on one good moment. There are lessons to be learned in every experience, and keeping an open mind allows you to discover them. Growth often happens in the most unexpected places.

Q: What is something your students may be surprised to learn about you?

A: Students may be surprised to learn that I still get a little nervous before the first class each semester. I love connecting with others, but teaching pushes me out of my comfort zone in the best way.
