Tree Planting Honors Late NIU College of Business Colleague

Last week, friends, family and colleagues of Kristy Ross gathered to honor her memory and 20 years of service at the NIU College of Business.

The group met on the east side of Barsema Hall, near “Dad’s Pond,” for a short ceremony. Ross’ mother, Cheryl Ross, along with other members of her family, helped plant a purple catalpa tree in her honor. A bronze plaque bearing a dedication to Ross was installed at its base, creating a lasting tribute to her life, service and the impact she made on the NIU College of Business community.

Kristy Ross passed away suddenly in 2024. The tree is a fitting tribute to a beloved member of the college’s then-Department of Accountancy team, whose favorite color was purple.

“As I reflected on the placement of this tree, along a pathway traveled each day by so many students, faculty and staff, it seemed only fitting that it will stand here as a lasting reminder of Kristy’s impact on our college,” said Brad Cripe, interim chair of the Department of Accountancy and Finance. “May this tree serve as a living tribute to Kristy’s legacy, inspiring future generations with the kindness, dedication and spirit she brought to our college every day.”
