Yes. The NIU Scholars merit award, Dennis and Stacey Barsema Endowment in Social Entrepreneurship and KPMG LLP Scholarship.
Why did you choose your field of study?
I am passionate about making a positive difference in the world and would love to run my own social enterprise in the future.
How did you learn about NIU, and why did you choose to attend?
I learned about NIU through my college counselor in high school. Since I started as an accounting major, I chose NIU because of its highly ranked accounting program. Along with that, I loved the College of Business and the dorms were very nice and reasonably priced compared to other universities.
Are you involved in any activities at NIU?
I am involved in many things on campus including my own organization, Barsema’s Closet, which is a resource in the College of Business for students to obtain business clothing for a low cost. I am also involved in Delta Sigma Pi, CAUSE, Dean’s Student Advisory Board, and Women’s Leadership Institute.
What do you like about our campus and community?
I love how friendly everyone is on campus and it is great to see all of the people that are trying to make a positive difference in the community.
What has your experience inside the classroom been like at NIU?
I have had an amazing experience in the classrooms at NIU — more specifically, the business classes in Barsema Hall are always wonderful. The professors really care about student success and they are all very knowledgeable in their fields. I feel like I am getting the best education at NIU.
What is something you have experienced at NIU that you will be able to take with you into future endeavors in your field?
My experience of starting my own organization is definitely something that I can take into my future career. Since I aspire to become an entrepreneur, I now have the experience to start something from the ground up.
Would you recommend NIU to others and why? What’s a general piece of advice you’d give to someone starting college?
I would recommend NIU to other students because of the amazing community, top-notch classes, and opportunities that are available on and off of campus. I would advise new students to get involved as much as they can while at NIU. There are so many awesome student organizations available on campus, and it really shows that you are the best of the best to employers if you are involved while maintaining a good GPA.
