Global learning; global reach. Reflections from an MBA student.

Like many NIU students, Devin McDonough (2017 B.S. ACCY; Global MBA 2019) never traveled outside the U.S. That is, until he came to NIU. The NIU accountancy alumnus started taking MBA classes and soon decided to pursue his Master of International Management at Sapienza University in Rome, Italy. “I came from an accountancy background, which was specific, but I knew I wanted to gain deeper communication and leadership skills while traveling abroad,” said Devin. Not only did the classes in Sapienza give him real-world experience in team management, the international location left a lasting impression on his academics and boosted his personal confidence. “Because of my travels, I feel like I can work internationally. I never thought it was an option for me before. After this year, I would seriously consider it,” said Devin. Our Global MBA Program aims to intersect student interests and goals with cultural awareness and our international partners tap into our student aspirations while allowing them to hone their existing skills.

While Devin learned much in the classroom, he also gained the drive to seek more international exposure through engagement and cultural immersion. Devin states, “It really did give me so much confidence. I remember I was sitting on the Spanish steps, and I looked around … and it hit me … I am here and I’m prepared for this experience, and I will never forget that feeling.” Devin’s story is one of many.
