Students of NIU Business: Frank Acheampong

Hometown: DeKalb, IL

Major: Operations Management and Information Systems major

Transfer From: Harper College

What is your major, and why did you choose your field of study?
My major is OM&IS, Operations Management and Information Systems. Prior to coming to school at NIU, I worked in the manufacturing field as well as the IT field for about 10 years without a degree. Upon my wife’s passing about 4 years ago, I made a vow to myself and son to complete my education in my area of work.

How did you learn about NIU, and why did you choose to attend?
I attended community college at Harper College in Palatine, and upon speaking to a counselor about my career path, he advised me about the major NIU offered. … I didn’t hesitate to work on transferring to NIU. I made sure to work as hard as possible to get into the program, which I did with honors from Harper College.

What is something you have experienced at NIU that you will be able to take with you into future endeavors in your field?
There are lots of good things I have experienced here but one area that stands out for me is the Experiential Learning Center, which allows students to work on real-life situation given to us by companies. I believe this will prepare me for the corporate world.

Would you recommend NIU to others and why? What’s a general piece of advice you’d give to someone starting college?
Most certainly, I will recommend NIU to others because it’s a great atmosphere to learn and meet a diverse group of individuals with the same objective. A general piece of advice I would give to someone starting college is, study hard, connect with others and organizations, and never lose focus on what your end goal is.
