Application deadline is March 1!
At NIU, we are known for our hands-on experiential learning, which oftentimes take our students off campus and as far as classrooms across the globe.
NIU students in all majors who have an interest in entrepreneurial business, can apply to be considered for the three-week European Innovation Academy (EIA) in Porto, Portugal. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 1, at 11:59 p.m.
After all applications are in, the NIU College of Business will select up to three NIU students based on their entrepreneurial interests and accomplishments to participate in this innovative and exciting program with the brightest minds from global universities. Airfare, registration, and accommodation costs will be covered through the McGrath Fund, which supports student activities, expand and develop entrepreneurship programs and allow the college to invest in faculty.
All NIU students are eligible and encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to juniors or seniors. The selection committee will prioritize students who have not received prior funding for similar entrepreneurship/study abroad programs. Remember, the selection committee is looking for evidence of entrepreneurial interest and activities.
Keira McFarland is a senior in accountancy and participated in the trip last year.
“EIA was once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore a new country while learning about entrepreneurship and creating a business,” McFarland said. “I also met new friends from all over the world who are all interested in entrepreneurship. The highlight of EIA is making lasting friendships with people who enjoy making a change.
McFarland noted that the program takes students through the step-by-step process of creating a business in three weeks, with the possible opportunity to earn funding for that business. There are over 500 students and 50+ mentors that attend this program.
Furkan Gur, associate professor in entrepreneurship, believes EIA has significant benefits for NIU students.
“An entrepreneurial mindset is a critical skill that we hope to cultivate in our students at NIU,” he said. “The European Innovation Academy’s summer program is a transformational experience in Porto where students converge from across the globe to collaborate, innovate, and pave the way for their entrepreneurial dreams. Students have the opportunity to go through an immersive experience, harnessing the power of diversity and creativity, as they craft ideas into tangible business models, poised to captivate investors.”
To apply, send your letter of interest, résumé and one letter of recommendation to Associate Professor Furkan Gur at fgur@niu.edu. For more information about the international program, visit www.inacademy.eu/.
