Hometown: Aurora, IL
Year: Expected graduation: May 2020
Major: Business Administration
What is your major, and why did you choose your field of study?
My major is business administration and I’m going to complete a certificate in information systems my senior year. I chose my field of study because during my time at West Aurora High School, I enrolled in several business courses, such as business law and sports marketing. Business just grew on me and has become a strong passion of mine.
How did you learn about NIU, and why did you choose to attend?
We were on our way back from a college visit when my father got off the highway to show me NIU. The campus certainly caught my attention. A few months later my high school counselor called me down to his office and encouraged me to apply to NIU’s CHANCE Program. My counselor knew I had great grades, was involved in many organizations and sports, and that the only thing discouraging me at the time was my ACT score. After going through application process, interview day, and completing a math test, I became a Huskie.
Do you have any favorite activities or events at NIU? What else do you do for fun in your spare time?
I mostly enjoy attending sporting, CHANCE Program and academic events. In my free time, I write poetry and short stories, hang out with friends, work out and post cooking videos of my weekly show called “Soulful Sunday” on my social media. I also truly enjoy public speaking events I’ve been part of.
What do you like about campus and the DeKalb area?
What I like most about NIU is how personable the faculty members are. I’ve had the great fortune to meet very genuine people from all walks of life. The diversity of the campus is astonishing, and I enjoy learning about all the different cultures.
What has your experience inside the classroom been like at NIU?
My experience at NIU has been amazing. The faculty are very caring and selfless. Our success as students is something you can tell each and every person at NIU cares about.
What is something you have experienced at NIU that you will be able to take with you into future endeavors in your field?
One thing I’ve learned is how important it is to form connections with the people around you. CHANCE has helped teach me that the more people you know and build relationships with, the more opportunities open up. Learning this skill has helped me utilize the tutoring services, professor office hours, great study groups, and the many free services NIU offers.
What is up next for you after your time at NIU? Any plans you would like to share?
My plan after my time at NIU is to work for a Fortune 500 company. Not sure which aspect of business I’ll focus on yet. I’d like to continue school and get my master degree.
Would you recommend NIU to others and why? What’s a general piece of advice you’d give to someone starting college?
I would recommend NIU to others because it’s an institution with a strong reputation, very diverse student body and five-star faculty. You can sense student needs come first, and the university has many great resources and organizations.
My piece of advice for someone starting college is to always keep your eyes open to every opportunity that comes your way and live a balanced lifestyle. You want to build a body of work with many different experiences, not just in one area of your college experience.
